Fair Isle February

We looooooove colorwork! The fair-isle technique is fun to do and even with just a handful of basic skills, one can add a lot of interest to an otherwise simple sweater, hat, scarf or anything. Throughout the month of February, we’re offering classes for fair-isle-ers of every skill level. If you’ve never tried knitting color patterns before and would like to learn, try our felted fair-isle bag class. If you want to advance your colorwork skills, the fair-isle hat class is perfect for you. If you want a bit of a challenge, join the traditional fair-isle mitten class. There’s lots of other great project classes too so check ‘em out and sign up soon so you don’t miss out.

Learn to Knit or Crochet

Learn to Knit: The Basics
In this class total beginners will learn all the basics of knitting. Our instructor will demonstrate how to cast on, carry your yarn, and how to do the knit stitch.

Learn to Knit: Next Steps
Once students have learned the basics, here’s a class with a bit more. Our instructor will show you how to do the purl stitch, bind off your work, understand the basics of gauge, and a touch about how to read a pattern.

Learn to Crochet: Next Steps
After The Basics class you’re ready for Next Steps. In this class our instructor will show you how to do the half-double and double crochet stitches, properly turn your work, understand the basics of gauge, and how to read a pattern.

Fair Isle Classes

Felted Fair-Isle Bag
This fun little bag project is a great low-stress way to learn how to knit fair-isle colowork. The felting process makes for a nice, sturdy bag and is very forgiving of mistakes. If you’ve never tried fair-isle before and you want to give it a try, this class is for you.

materials: ~400 yds bulky weight yarn in at least two colors, US size 11 circular needle 24″ in length, stitch markers

three tams hat

Fair-Isle “Three Tams” Hat 
This intermediate fair-isle project is a great “next step” class following the felted fair-isle bag if you’re ready for more stranded colorwork techniques. The Three Tams pattern gives a choice of easy charts for the same hat shape and you can use as many colors as you want – customize your perfect beret!
skills: knit and purl, knitting in the round
materials: ~200 yds worsted weight yarn in at least two colors (try a self-striping yarn!), US size 4 and size 6 needles for knitting in the round, US size 6 double-pointed needles, stitch makers, pattern

Elise mittens

Fair-Isle “Elise Mittens” by Johanne Landin
An advanced fair-isle class for aspiring colorwork connoisseurs. These traditional mittens feature fine weight yarn and an intricate color pattern making for mittens you can proudly brag about. In addition to furthering your color knitting skills, you’ll also learn how to knit in the round using the two-circular method.

Crochet Amigurumi with Guest Instructor Ariella Miles
Our guest instructor and Amigurumi expert, Ariella Miles of for the love of handknit, will teach you the basics of how to make three-dimensional crocheted shapes while you create your own adorable custom stuffed toy.

“From Start to Finish” Lecture
You asked for it so, you got it. This lecture will walk you through a project “from start to finish.” Our instructor will help you understand how to choose the right yarn for a project considering yarn weight, gauge, and fiber content. You’ll also learn great tips for finishing a project including how to block pieces and sew seams. You’ll have the know-how to create professional looking items after this informative lecture.

Crocheted Flora Mitts
These crocheted fingerless mitts are a great project for an intermediate crafter. The flower motif along the back of the hand is an adorable touch and the crocheted ribbing gives the mitts a great fit.

Beginner Crocheted Hat
A great class for a crochet beginner. Once you know the basic stitches, you can easily learn how to make a hat. Our instructor will teach you how to crochet in the round and some basic increasing techniques while making this functional beanie.

Beginner Top-Down Raglan Cardigan
This cardigan class is perfect for the knitter that wants to make a garment for the first time. Worked in super bulky yarn, this project is fast and only requires basic knitting techniques. Let our instructor show you how quick and easy it can be to knit a sweater. If you can make a hat, sock, or mitten you can make this cardigan… really!

Class Policy

Stix requires at least 4 students per class so sign up with a friend. If 4 students haven’t signed up at least 24 hours in advance, Stix may cancel or reschedule the class (if paid, you’ll will get a full refund). Stix classes are free when your purchase your materials for the class at Stix in advance. If you wish to purchase yarn elsewhere or use supplies in your stash, we will ask you to pay a $15 class fee. Guest instructors or other special events may require that we charge a class fee for each student and we will always advertise such fees when this happens. Please sign up for all classes in advance by either calling us at 556-5786 or coming by the store.
